ALTERED EARTH

2012 PRODUCER, DOUG AITKEN WORKSHOP

The culmination of three years’ work, ALTERED EARTH explores the ever-evolving geography and ecosystem of the Camargue, a wildlife preserve between the tributaries of the Rhone south of Arles. Commissioned by the LUMA Foundation, the site-specific work, was exhibited in Arles’ Parc des Ateliers using massive projections and improvised musical performances. The scale of screens and projections gave vivid new life to the natural detail of the surrounding Provençal terrain. We worked with Meri Media to develop an app that blends the installation experience with that of the surrounding landscape. Incorporating moving image, literature, data visualizations and sound design from musicians White Rainbow, CFCF and Lichens, the application invites the user to piece together fragments of the landscape to create their own fictional narrative of the Camargue.
